What do I look for when shopping breeders?

I will be ready to buy a pointing lab pup next fall (2001), but I want to be sure I get what I pay for. What are some important questions (besides price!) that I could ask each breeder? I know hips and eyes are important, but are there varying degrees of probability, too? Any advice will be welcome and appreciated. Thank you.
